Maths week

June 23rd, 2016

This week is maths week. We have done lots of exciting activities. We had a visitor from a maths magician. We made posters to show how maths is magnificent as well as completing activities with other classes. We made paint by numbers using fractions with year 5. With year one we created art work of the school using different shapes. It’s been a fun week!

School trip

March 11th, 2016

On Friday we went to Stratford in London! We had an extremely busy day. We went as part of our story writing project ‘Catching Words’, with the Discovery Centre. When we arrived we went to the Olympic Park. We looked at the Olympic stadium and other buildings. In maths we had been learning about shapes so we went on a hunt to find as many shapes as we could. We also noticed the shadows on the floor. Working as scientists we discussed what may happen to the shadows over time throughout the day.

We then found a fantastic viewing area where we could see the skyline of London. We sketched the skyline thinking about different textures. This is what we will be looking at in art next term.

We then got to play in the park before heading to the Discovery Centre. When we got there we built a story together and looked around the centre for inspiration.

Maths investigation

March 11th, 2016

In maths we have been looking at graphs. We worked in groups to interpret line graphs. We looked at what happens to a cup of tea when it cools and a flower when it grows.

We also drew out own graphs and used keys when there were multiple data sets.

3D shapes

February 12th, 2016

This week we have been looking at shapes.

We have learnt the different types of angles and can even draw and measure them!

We have also learnt the different types of triangles.

We learnt all about 2D shapes and their names and properties. We then moved on to 3D shapes. We looked at their properties and made Top Trump cards which we could play. We even got to make our own 3D shapes from nets. We had to predict what we thought the shape would be. Then we wrote the features of the shape on post stick notes.

In maths we carry out investigations. We had been learning about rounding in class and therefore we did an investigation the following week on rounding. We had to break the code to work out the message.

Maths show

October 7th, 2015

We were very lucky at Aveley Primary to watch a maths show. It was extremely funny and we enjoyed watching it!
